I'm very excited to present a brand new talk, "Rooted in Appalachia," for the Columbus (Ohio) Natural History Society at 7:30 pm on December 12, 2011. This is their special annual holiday meeting, and I understand there will be holiday desserts. Oh dear. It will be held on the West Campus of The Ohio State University at the Museum of Biological Diversity, 1315 Kinnear Road, Columbus OH 43212. You can get a map and directions here.

I've finally put together a general natural history talk specifically so I can roll around in all the things I love about Appalachian Ohio. But it's also about making your own fun. For instance: If you love a rare wildflower like rose gentian

why not rope off where it grows so it doesn't get mowed,

gather some of its dust-fine seeds

and grow a hundred of your own?

Gray tree frogs, same deal.

You like 'em? Get you some seeds.

Grow your own.

It's always worth the trouble to raise something up.

Monarchs, same deal.

"Rooted in Appalachia" is about making your own fun. Free fun.

It's about getting what your spirit needs out of the land.
