Columbus Area Zick Alert!

Friday, December 2, 2011

I'm very excited to present a brand new talk, "Rooted in Appalachia," for the Columbus (Ohio) Natural History Society at 7:30 pm on December 12, 2011.  This is their special annual holiday meeting, and I understand there will be holiday desserts. Oh dear. It will be held on the West Campus of The Ohio State University at the Museum of Biological Diversity, 1315 Kinnear Road, Columbus OH  43212. You can get a map and directions here.

I've finally put together a general natural history talk specifically so I can roll around in all the things I love about Appalachian Ohio. But it's also about making your own fun. For instance: If you love a rare wildflower like rose gentian

why not rope off where it grows so it doesn't get mowed,
gather some of its dust-fine seeds
and grow a hundred of your own?

Gray tree frogs, same deal.

You like 'em? Get you some seeds.

Grow your own.

It's always worth the trouble to raise something up.

Monarchs, same deal.

"Rooted in Appalachia" is about making your own fun. Free fun.

It's about getting what your spirit needs out of the land.

Hope to see you there! Be sure to blurt "BLOG" if you found me here. And slap my hand if you catch me reaching for Christmas cookies.

I'll be speaking with my beloved Ann Fisher of WOSU's All Sides LIVE in the studio from 11-12 that morning, December 12. I wind up talking and usually laughing with Ann about once a month for an hour or so, and I can't wait to meet her!

Oh - I wish I was still in Ohio so I could go! Sounds like fun. I don't suppose you're coming to the North Woods of Wisconsin any time soon.

I wish I could go, too. Someday I will hear you in person. Until then I absolutely delight in each new post. Those are wonderful ideas about wildflowers, tree frogs and monarch's. Carol of "wildlife around us" has been bringing in Monarch eggs, feeding and protecting them until they can be released. She has recorded her trials, errors, and what worked on her blog. Here's one post:

Thanks for sharing your love of nature and life, Julie.

"It's always worth the trouble to raise something up." What a profound truth! Thanks Julie.
