Sweet Western Birds

The sun was warm at Giant Springs, and cedar waxwings were basking.
Smooth little dumpling birds, hanging in the bare branches like ornaments.
A Bullock's oriole flaunted his snowy epaulets in the same tree.
A firebrand of a bird, singing perhaps about the swarms of midges all around him, about abundance.
While lower down, a least flycatcher sat her fluffy nest.

Oh Boy! And I was just admiring a flotilla of cedar waxwings right out my window--hundreds, looks like. Not in MY yard, of course, but in a neighbor's tree. I was trying to figure out if they were cedar or Bohemian, but I couldn't see the undertail coverts, because they were all covert up. I went with cedar because they weren't playing bongos. You bird your way, and I'll bird mine.
It's hard to tell them apart because both species have soul patches, too.
What a wonderful blog! I've just discovered this treasure trove and have been reading past entries. Thank you so much for the Zick dough recipe! I really look forward to each post, and am already such a Chet Baker fan. Thank you for sharing all of this with us!
